The term “Hereditary Optic Neuropathies” indicates a set of atrophic and degenerative manifestations of the optic nerve, with different modes of genetic transmission. They include: Autosomal Dominant Optic Neuropathy, the most common form, characterized by an early visual impairment that occurs in early childhood and stabilizes around 10 years of age. The visual deficit is bilateral and is accompanied by alteration of the perception of colors (dyschromatopsia); Autosomal Recessive Optic Neuropathy, extremely rare, manifests itself from birth or in the first years of life with severe bilateral reduction of visual acuity, up to blindness; Leber Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON), affects predominanly male young adults and has a mitochondrial transmission.
